Marriage Is…

Marriage is not what most young couples think it is.

Marriage is work. You cannot just get married and think you are going to live happily ever after.marriage-is

You have to communicate. You have to trust. You have to love. You have to respect. You have to keep trying even when you want to give up. You have to be willing to bend. You have to be willing to compromise.

We are all imperfect here this side of heaven. So put those two imperfect people under one roof and sooner or later there is going to be contention, disagreements, hurt feelings, angry words, frustration and heartbreak. We are all imperfect, we all have faults, and we all fall short in relationships.

When I was trying to save my first marriage I read a book called, “Love & Respect: The Love She Most Desires; The Respect He Desperately Needs” by Emerson Eggerich. I wish I would say it saved my marriage and we lived happily ever after but it did not. I did however learn a lot and I did pass the book on to others. Thankfully it helped their marriages!

This past week I was reading a post on Facebook. This wife asked her husband to go to the store to grab a couple things. He came home with what she asked plus a couple gifts for her: slim fast and diet pills. She stated that gift giving wasn’t his strength. Thankfully one of the commenters posted this from a local church: Week 6: Love and Respect. I was so excited to see this!

Marriage is not about tossing your spouse aside because you are tired of them and want someone new and exciting. Marriage is not about tossing your spouse aside because you don’t want to talk about it anymore. Marriage is not about tossing your spouse aside because your sick of it. This is what Jesus was talking about in Matthew 5

31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[f] 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

That is what they used to do back in Jesus’ day. They got tired of their spouse and they would toss them aside and move on to greener pastures. Then those pastures turned brown and they would toss and move again.

Take time to listen to or watch Love and Respect. Marriage is one of the hardest and yet most rewarding things God blessed us with. Don’t just toss your spouse aside. Work with them, you will never regret it!
