So tonight I started to reflect on my past.
I started to think about my Grandparents farm. I spent a lot of time growing up on that farm. It wasn’t a big home; 3 bedrooms and one was more like a closet than a room, family room, kitchen, bathroom, living room, and cellar/basement. It wasn’t even that big when they bought it. They made the addition of the basement and living room and then porch after they moved in!
I would spend lots of holidays and weekends and summer weeks up at that house. It was with cousins and aunts and uncles. I learned how to fish there. I learned about life and death up there (cows, chickens, fish, ducks and more). I learned about the hard work of having a farm; even if it was only for you! I learned how to shuck corn and clean green/yellow beans. I learned how to pick strawberries. I learned how to fire a gun. We would run down a huge hill on the side of the house and go into the pond my Grandpa had dug in their backyard. We would go for walks, tube down the river, dig through the “dump” that was across the road in the “forest”, we had a pet deer named Bambi that we would feed carrots to, we would create a house out of lilac bushes that were on the side of my grandparents house that was next to the road, I learned about canning and freezing foods and making real foods; like cakes, pies, non processed junk and we would help feed all the animals. I also learned about fresh fruit, especially pears. Man that was an amazing pear tree!
I miss that farm. I looked at it tonight (amazing what the internet can show you these days) and some things are the same but most of it has changed. My grandpa passed away in March 2007. It seems like a lifetime ago.
As I was thinking about and going back to simpler times I started to really get sucked into the past. There is nothing wrong with visiting the past! There is nothing wrong with reflecting on the past to help you learn and move past things. Yet you don’t want to get stuck there!
I was starting to get stuck there. I was losing my focus on what God has given me since 2007. I learned a lot at this place. I will be forever grateful for the life I had at this farm. The time with family. The summer, winter, spring and falls we had there! We were graced with so many wonderful years and memories here!
It may have changed but the things I was blessed to learn there haven’t changed. I had to have help bringing me back to the present time tonight.
Thank you God for Your great blessings. No matter what else is to come, I am able to reflect on my past and know You have blessed us with so much! Thank you not only for what we were blessed with in the past but also for the help bringing me back to the present time!
